5mcolor1) Instrumentalists were sent music in a mailing several weeks ago. It is important that you take time and listen to the reference recordings (posted on-line, more about that below) and begin reviewing your parts prior to camp. Our rehearsals are to be used to make the ensemble sound great – so please come as prepared as you can be. Our Tribute Tour (with music by Prince, Michael Jackson, Earth Wind and Fire, Whitney Houston, Jimi Hendrix and Wilson Pickett) has tremendous potential that can be achieved by us giving our best effort!

5) The picture day for our band will be Wednesday, August 24th at 12:30 p.m.
6) Meet the Mustangs is scheduled for Wednesday, August 24th at 7:00 p.m. We will meet at 5:30 p.m. for a light rehearsal and inspection prior to marching into the stadium at 6:45 p.m.
7) Our first major performance of the year is scheduled for Saturday, August 6th at Kennywood Park. We will use Of Pride and Patriots and The Mercer High School Fight Song for our parade block. As you begin preparing yourself musically, focus on playing those two from memory as we will need them to be performance ready after only 5 rehearsals!
8) All Rookies (members in their first year of marching band) are invited and encouraged to stay for lunch with band officers and front captains after the first day of mini-camp on August 1st. A light lunch of Pizza and drinks will be served and we will conclude by 1:00 p.m.
9) Those students needing to order new Dinkles or Boots will be measured during the mini-camp days. If you did not check your footwear prior to turning in your contract and order form, we can get you sized and get a pair of Dinkles or Boots ordered for you.
10) A full itinerary for our spring trip to Washington, D.C. on May 26-29 will be made available during mini-camp. This trip will include a tour of our nation’s capital, attendance at the National Memorial Day Concert on the Capitol Lawn, a shared concert for the Jazz Ensemble and Concert Band as part of the National Memorial Day Concert Series, and our 5M Band will be one of at least 50 bands to march in the National Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 29, 2017.

Immediately following the parade, all members should report to the school to turn in their uniforms and instruments.

wpid-wp-1411937505388.jpegMarching Band Schedules are now available for the upcoming year. There are several updates to the handbook and student/parent contract. The entire schedule for the year has been provided in the packet (including the spring trip practices).

Band banquet reservation are due on May 2, 2016 by 3:15 p.m.

Band Seniors are reminded that the Booster Memorial Scholarship Essays are due to Dr. Weller by Thursday, April 28, 2016.

Band Seniors are also reminded that Senior Information for the Band Banquet Program is due to Dr. Weller by Monday, May 2, 2016.

Jazz Ensemble will rehearse on the next two Tuesdays (April 26 & May 3 beginning at 3:30 p.m. and concluding at 4:15 p.m.). Members are asked to plan accordingly so they are present for the entire rehearsal.

Jazz Club will rehearse on April 26 & May 3 from the start of Advisory until 3:30.

Final concert of the year will be held on Thursday, May 5th. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Please note report times for this concert: HS/WE Personnel at 6:45 p.m., MS Personnel at 7:00 p.m. HS Personnel should dress in all black dress clothes. MS Personnel should dress in black pants – we will be Tye-dying shirts for our concert – please bring in your shirts by April 29th!

Finally, the band has been approved by our school board to travel to Washington D.C. next May. On that trip the Symphonic Band (combined Concert Band and Wind Ensemble Students) and Jazz Ensemble will present a join public concert, and the 5M Band will perform as part of the National Memorial Day Parade. We are in the process of gathering information from tour companies and planning to make an itinerary (inclusive of cost) available to all band students prior to the end of the year.

The Boosters will be collecting items on the following dates/times.  Please have items in saleable condition when dropping off.  Detailed description below of what we are taking. Girls in grades 7-11 auditioning for band fronts are reminded to check with the respective advisers regarding the times and dates of their upcoming practices in preparation for auditions on April 26th.

Band banquet reservation forms will be available on Friday, April 15th.

Jazz Ensemble will rehearse on the next two Tuesdays (April 12 & April 19 beginning during Advisory until 4:00 p.m.). Members are asked to plan accordingly so they are present for the entire rehearsal.

Final concert of the year will be held on Thursday, May 5th. 5mcolorMini-camp for Marching Band has been scheduled for August 1-5, 2016. The camp will meet daily from 8:30-11:30 a.m.Mega-camp for Marching Band has been tentatively scheduled for August 8-12, 2016. Camp will meet daily from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The Parent preview will be held on the evening of August 12th, and the band has been accepted and scheduled to perform at Kennywood on Saturday, August 6th. 2016-17 Marching Band Schedules will be available during the first week of April.

An informational meeting for girls in grades 7-11 interested in trying out for the band fronts will be held on Wednesday, April 6th during Advisory. Girls who cannot make this meeting must attend a meeting on Wednesday morning, April 6th at 7:30 a.m. Girls who fail to attend either one of the meetings will not be permitted to audition as all audition procedures and expectations are discussed.

Jazz Ensemble will rehearse on the next two Tuesdays (March 29 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. &  April 5 from Advisory until 4:00 p.m.). Members are asked to plan accordingly so they are present for the entire rehearsal. The main focus will be to continue work on Shiny Stockings, and rehearse Land of Make Believe and Weekend in Monaco.

Jazz Club will rehearse on Tuesday April 5 (change from original schedule) from the start of Advisory until 3:30. We will continue working on Birth of a Band, and a new song will be distributed as well.

Finally, the band has been approved by our school board to travel to Washington D.C. next May. On that trip the Symphonic Band (combined Concert Band and Wind Ensemble Students) and Jazz Ensemble will present a join public concert, and the 5M Band will perform as part of the National Memorial Day Parade. Information regarding the trip will be made available to all band students prior to the end of the year.

Congratulations to all three concert bands and the jazz ensemble on a wonderful concert on the evening of March 3rd. We now begin work on our next concert (May 5th at 7:30 p.m.). The theme of the concert is “Distant Lands and the Hometown Bands”.

Mini-camp for Marching Band has been tentatively scheduled for August 1-5, 2016. The camp will meet daily from 8:30-11:30 a.m.Mega-camp for Marching Band has been tentatively scheduled for August 8-12, 2016. Camp will meet daily from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The Parent preview will be held on the evening of August 12th, and the band has been accepted and scheduled to perform at Kennywood on Saturday, August 6th (Please note the change in date – we were assigned this date by Kennywood). 2016-17 Marching Band Schedules will be available by mid-March.

Congratultaions to Zach Baker and Clifford Hughes (Freshman Festival Band), and Jess McGraw, Darby Miller, David Ellis, Grant Haggard, and Max Puskar (JH Festival Band) who will represent Mercer at the PMEA District 5 Freshmen/JH Band Fest on March 22, 2016!

Jazz Ensemble will rehearse on the next two Tuesdays (March 8 & March 15) from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. Members are asked to plan accordingly so they are present for the entire rehearsal. The main focus will be to prepare Shiny Stockings and A Moment Like This for Sweet Sounds on Thursday, March 17th.

Jazz Club will rehearse on the next two Tuesdays (March 8 & March 15) from the start of Advisory until 3:30. We will continue working on Birth of a Band, and a new song will be distributed as well.

Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble should report at 6:00 p.m. for Sweet Sounds on the evening of March 17th. The “sweet refreshments” will begin being served at 6:00 p.m. and the “sweet sounds” will begin at 6:45 p.m. An informational letter for all WE & JE members will be coming home during the week of March 7th.

Best wishes to Jordyn Buchanan & Abby Grabigel as they audition at Regional Band this week at Valley High School (March 9-11) for a spot in one of the PMEA State Bands!!!
